I am happy that you have taken this initiative to sensitize people in campus.
Initially you might face strong oppose but that is the sign that people need sensitization there.

    @ to just said this
i don’t know whether this is showing sensitivity or insensitivity i want to ask you one thing did you ever thought on this whole idea of putting posters asking people……… what are you staring at?……..makes sense and…. adding to it generalizing….one response. By doing this you people actually letting the bull to hone the horns……….
    be more objective….
    make your intentions clear……
believe me a barrage full of phalocentric thought is taking it as challenge…
so be objective…… avoid short run STUNTS

I am sorry, I do not understand. Kindly clarify. The poster did not seek a response. As far as being clear about our intentions goes, there are no ready made answers. It is a process and requires your engagement which is appreciated. The about section in the blog spells out the overarching ideas/need to start something like this.

    @Suresh

The question on the poster was a rhetoric.

“Rhetoric is generally understood to be the art or technique of persuasion through the use of oral, visual, or written language. A rhetorical question is a question which is asked to have a persuasive effect, rather than to elicit an answer”

I completely agree with Sonali….we asked a honest question, and we got a honest answer…now I am not sure if the intention was honest or not….but cant doubt the answer…and lets not over-analyse stuff…sometimes it works just to ignore some responses….but yes, I hate the anonymity, whoever commented should have left a name..!!!

    @ Varun
You seem to construct ignorance as bliss.
Lets just ignore sexual harassment as well then. Ah! Bliss.

Also, PLEASE refer to the post above your response. It defines rhetoric. (@ Suresh).

    Well…only if it was that simple….join 2 and 2 and make 5..!!!
Sexual harassment is a high priority issue, but dont expect quick-fix solutions, it requires a concerted, long drawn process of making people aware of their actions…and not just some “code of conduct” pamphlets..!!!

honestly… while i think it is wrong to generalize on just one response that u have got, that single response, over and above reflecting on the one who made it, has succeeded in making a lot of unaware people people aware of the biases and flaws inherent in them that they never realized there existed….good work people

well, first of all i must thnk those who hv initiated this poster abt staring….its reality n it shouldn be ignored, hypocrisy mindset shud be changed…its high time tht women shudnt be considered as sex object, i hv come across a certain colleagues in our campus itself , who cant stand a women smoking …i wud say those colleagues r nt liable to be called a part of society !

all @ et al in tiss….

u wanted to know HONESTLY…what were men looking at…n you got a simple n singular answer…and then we are happy enough to go on generalizing the answer..just because the answer met our expection..wot we intended to receive by sticking up that poster…and we go on writing volumes and volumes on it … blogs, books and so on and so forth….now one important question for all of you….demystify the link of staring at BOOBS with physical harrasment…how just looking at women makes her a object of sex…EVEN how, if a bunch ful of boys are going to stop staring, is going to reduce the stares the girl is going to receive tomorrow morning outside the main gate…not speaking of any other physical advances….

i think the purpose of poster was to generate a debate around this sensitive issue…:)
it was nt to meant 2 target men in genral…wht these ppl r trying 2 do is to sensitize ppl..n also view the world frm a female perspective which has alwayz been viewd frm a phallocentric way… ppl feeling offended or an agreemernt to it, both r respected n accepted here..

Ankur i agree with you….i feel dat the male students are not dat bad as it comes out of the above responses…and even the discussion is becoming lop sided…n even the responses seen here are from those ppl who are already sensitized n thus d discussion…i hope ven v were occupied with such discussions…one person n only one person who really need sensitization have stopped STARING….dan all the resources gone in building up dis debate would be regarded as succesful…

  • 33. Varun (HRM)  |  August 15, 2008 at 8:55 am

The level of measurement cannot be decided by us guys, the perpetrators…it has to be decided by the women..why is it that sometimes you can look as much but you dont offend a woman’s modesty, else even a glance can be offensive…its the INTENTION which matters, and everyone knows the intent behind…if you notice carefully, when a lady looks back at the guy who has been oggling, he shall instantly move his glance away…thats the guilty mind in action…!!!!

so VARUN …ver does it leads to…we say we wanna change mindset and attitude of boys…n dan we say women are to decide which stare is harful n which is not…n ahain we do not know where to start….with the stares..with mind directing the stares or defining the stares from an feminist view……..phew!!! dis is notleading us to anywhere…

varun and ankur…meeting on the issue with out any concrete idea of how to change attitude of ppls…would be again draining our energies….come out with basic simple strategies that would work wonderful atleast in an highly educated society within TISS…i s’ppose such an community is easier to address ….remember all we are talking of SUSTAINED BEHAVIOR CHANGES..just not a change in perspective for just heck of it and all d attitudinal changes wear off once we r out of MAIN GATE…n think now who know me in this big big world….hope u both understand at wot level i m putting my thoughts here

@ VArun…had it not been this virtual world, I believe this issue would not have been discussed in length leave alone addressing it in real world…so i would prefer to continue this kinda discussions over the blogosphere and as and when required can be taken up in real interaction as you have suggested…!!!
